How do memories make a place? Longtime residents from the Market community discuss the vibrant history of the area. Tales of celebrity visits, cows in kitchens, long-gone boozers with irregular hours, and a time when your neighbour would leave the key in the door – and the door unlocked.

OLD HORSE MARKET

This video is from an RTÉ News report broadcast on 17 July 1984, documenting the of old Horse Fair once held in May’s Market. It includes interviews with market characters following the reopening of the fair in 1984, 15 years after it initially closed in 1969.

 

INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY

In 2019, the community hosted its 2nd annual pride night. This night examined the intrinsic link between the struggle for LGBT rights and the struggle against imperialism nationally and internationally.

The speakers included Gethin Roberts from Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, Cathal Kerrigan and Tarlach MacNiallias from Lesbians and Gays Against Imperialism, chaired by Marie Quiery.
